RIP Pratan Pimpsurp

I have just been informed that One of my good friends, Pratan Pimpsurp, a great artist and Sculptor has just passed away from a massive Heart Attack. He will be remembered as the little Artist with a big heart. Pratan was from Thailand and was only 4'9" tall. He was 49 years old. His last major carving event was the NICA Nationals in Downer's Grove, Il. last month. Please pray for his family. RIP Pratan, We will always remember your smile. I will post any further...

I wanted to pass this on to you because I knew this man and he was a major influence to the beginning of my business back in 1991. He was a bright icon in the world of Culinary arts and Ice Sculpture and will leave his mark indefinitely on my life and in many others. To me, he was the Bob Hope in the world of Culinary arts to the Military. He will be truly missed but always remembered as a true friend and Mentor.

how to make clear ice

Hi All

a question

how do I make clear ice in a home freezer, any hope at all? I tried boiling it twice no avail, so I must come to those who know, or may know.

I carve wood as a hobby and have an intesting thing to try with Scouts if I can get a few cantelope sized pieces of reasonably clear ice.

California Wildfires out of control

Things are finally calming down out here after the worst firestorm in California's history. Many thousands are homeless. Fortunately there were not many lifes lost. Please help if you can by donating to the American Red Cross or Save the Children who is directly involved with Humanitarian efforts, just as with Katrina. The nearest blaze to us was in the Santiago Canyon area which is 15 miles from us and did not directly affected us or our property. We did lose power and I lost some ice....

Sales Tax on Ice Sculptures

Is anyone out there exempt from paying Sales Tax on an Ice Sculpture? I heard that in some states, an ice sculpture is tax free and considered a food product. I am trying to build a case with my tax person to fight the sales tax charge on an Ice Sculpture in California as I have heard that it is exempt in some states.

I noticed that the NICA Message Boards have been removed from the new NICA website. I do not know if they have intentions of reinstating the links but I will continue to run and moderate this and the Google Board regardless. Fuel Prices & Delivery Charges

I have been frustrated lately at the skyrocketing fuel prices...+35 cents in the last 2 weeks!. We are now up to $3.50 per gallon!. I have devised an equation to keep up with it. I do not want to lose customers because of increased delivery costs so I want to be fair with the customer. I am calculating it exactly by the amount of fuel used by the price at the pump. good chisels

I am looking to add chisel work to my sculptures. I have used cheap chisels in the past. They go dull so fast. my question would be are the hiryu chisels worth the money? what size's are good to start with?

I started a new NICA message board on Google Groups. There is registration required and I recommend using a handle instead of your E-mail address. This should be a good discussion board which also has support for uploading images, creating pages, and links to other google services. Freezing Half Color Blocks

I recently tried my hand at freezing half color blocks. I was disapointed with my initial results, the clear portion was very wavy, making the transition from clear to colored uneven.

I first froze a 1/2 block in the clinebell machine, then I added the color and milk.

I this normal, or is there a better method to this.

I just checked my old NICA email for the first time in a long time. Please make sure that if you're trying to update your Find-a-sculptor entry, that you send the information to the email address on nica.org. Apparently, a few people have been sending new info to iceweb@aol.com, which is connected to me, and I no longer check it, as I no longer have anything to do with www.nica.org. Chain Saw Preferences

I am going to invest in a new chain saw. I have a @#%$ Remmington right now. I tried using a Makita UC4000, wich I liked very much and I am comparing it to the Husqvarna 316. Any opinions on this?

I think I am going to get the Husqvarna. Anyone try any of them?
